Poseidon

Many things about this film bug me. I think it is a failed attempt to remake what was a great film. (And yes, using different characters with the same story is a remake.) Now, I can't say that this was true to the book its based on, because I never read it. So I'll go on my opinion alone.

This film received 'rave' reviews for its expertise in water effects. I have to agree. It looks like real water. It acts like real water. But the wide shots are clearly CG. How do I know this? Well, they told us. I was very happy that they kept the wide shots to a minimum and didn't over-do it with sweeping shots revolving around the ship. I like CG and all, but great films have great stories and are told in a somewhat realistic way. This was not a film by any of these standards. It was an effects flick.
I'm not sure where the characters were coming from and there was little thought given to what needed to be shown and what could just be skimmed over. The focus was clearly on the water.

Iron Man

First, let me just say, this movie was written with Robert Downey Jr. in mind. He does a wonderful job being what would seem like himself. Timing was great. Some of the effects were possibly a little overpowering. Actually, I can only think of one that really bothered me. It was when he was testing the suit in his garage (there were cars around so I'm gonna say garage for this one) and he was testing the flight ability and he just shoots up for the first time. I thought it was too fast and probably would have felt a little better if it was slowed down a few frames or maybe even a whole second. Otherwise the other effects didn't bother me. They were pretty awesome in fact.
Gwen Paltro sometimes bothers me with her acting, but I think she played an awesome Pepper. I'm not too familiar with the comic, so I don't know if they stayed true to the characters or not. But from my POV, the characters seemed to interact well with each other.
Jeff Bridges (as Stane) also made an amazing villain. I almost forgot he was The Dude, but he's very hard to forget that character. (And I will definitely be keeping an eye on him in 2011 when Tr2n comes out.) I definitely think the beard suits him well, not everyone can pull one off. (I would just look freakish.)
I'm not sure how to sum up Col. James Rhodes or Terrence Howard's version of Rhodes. I don't know if he is less masculine in the comics or if it's Howard's translation of the character. It was amusing. But, like Rhodey, I'm unsure of myself when trying to figure him out. He does help the comic relief, but not by much. Downey really nailed that part. Actually, he nailed the whole movie.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

First, I love Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf. And I was happy that they brought Karen Allen as Marion back for this one. Out of all the women in Indiana's life, I think she was best suited for him. Allison Doody was a German double agent, so it would have never worked. And Kate Capshaw's character was too vain and girly to be an option for Indy. Although, Temple of Doom was my favorite out of the whole series.

Now, I'd just like to say to all those critics out there, if you want a serious movie or something that isn't cheesy, then you shouldn't have seen Indiana Jones! It's kinda the point of those films. They're supposed to be fun action films, and that's exactly what this one was. Cheesy villain, unlikely stunts, and of course Indy's flair. I don't see why the critics didn't get that.

Let's start with the villain. Cate Blanchett did an amazing job. Her character, Irina Spalko, was so hilarious and out there, I don't know how she didn't laugh through every scene. The accent didn't really bother me. Only when she said Dr. Jones did it feel funny. And you can tell in certain scenes that she was straining with it. It didn't hinder the performance at all. It might have even added to it. Irina Spalko is not meant to be a serious character. And she herself isn't meant to really scare you. Her entourage does that.

Indiana stays true to his character. I even love how they made sure that they got his fear of snakes in there. And anyone who complains about Harrison Ford/Indiana Jones getting old, come on people. He is getting pretty old, but that's the nature of life. No one gets younger and no one can stay young. People naturally get old. Don't like, too bad.

Shia's character, Mutt, was pretty classic 50's bad boy. Maybe a bit too typical, but I did enjoy the play they got out of it.

The chase scene was well done and I'm glad they didn't make the stunts perfect. I don't know of anyone who can jump onto a moving motorcycle without getting a scrape or two. There were definitely a few things throughout the film my mom pointed out that I didn't notice right off. It made it more enjoyable for the both of us. She'd point out things to me, and I return the favor.

The addition of the animals and there reaction was a plus for me. A few of the scenes took place where humans wouldn't be. There needed to be a reaction of sorts in there. And I think adding the animal factor was a plus. You can tell there was thought put into it.

The one thing I wish there was more of was the puzzle. I felt that everything was kinda just figured out. No hidden passageways with a pause to feel the draft. No real dilemmas, except for that one where they have to run down that well. And where was that scene where Indy almost fails in a fight and wins because luck was on his side? If it was there, I didn't feel it. I think there were too many group fights and not enough one on one. And that damn skull saves everyones ass.

Effects wise, I felt it worked. There were scenes you knew were 3D and some you had to ask yourself about. The animals were 3D and so was a lot of the jungle chase/fight scene. I understand why they did it, I just wish they tried more to get it to feel more real. You also really feel like the camera moves way too smoothly. It's hard to simulate a real camera move in 3D. It winds up looking too CG most of the time. I know. It's part of what I do.
Most of the time, it's better to have a locked off camera. Sweeping moves are just too grand sometimes. But it's up to the director and what they want. Let's forget what reality dictates to us. And physics can just go right out the window.

Unfortunately, this film is not the only one that breaks from reality in this way. It's being done in all sorts of films. Hopefully, we'll either get used to it or the industry will realize what really makes a great film is the tangible.

Cloverfield

So, I finally saw it. And I must say I enjoyed it very much. I didn't see it on the big screen, just my 32'', so I wasn't dizzy or nauseous during or after viewing it. I did hear the stories of friends going to see it and having to leave because they were so dizzy or they were just about to blow chunks.
I also didn't see Blair Witch in theaters either, but honestly, come on. If something looks shaky on a commercial or trailer, don't ya kinda think that it would just be magnified by it being on a screen a thousand times larger?
The whole film did look like a home movie. And I think that made it pretty awesome. You did feel like that guy was holding the camera the whole time. And it did feel seamless. It's extremely hard to edit something like this film together. So I give props to the editors and camera men.
I highly recommend watching this movie from the comfort of your home. And it is definitely worth watching the extras on the dvd. You'll find some pretty interesting behind the scenes stuff.
Now, for the monster. The idea was that it was supposed to be a baby running around and confused and scared. I really didn't see that at all. The actual design was the interesting, but it didn't remind me of a baby. Puppies have big paws and toddlers have large heads. And both stumble around a lot. I've even heard of people refer to toddler walks as drunken midgets. This monster definitely didn't look like it was having a problem walking. That and why then would it spew out all those little guys. That kinda confused me.
The renders of the little guys were pretty good. Not so for the large guy. It was almost there, but it was off. And whenever you strive for realism, if it doesn't look perfect, it looks wrong.
Even though I do have some erks about the monster, but I'm still curious about the story.
